For years, I had a packing system. I folded my clothes on the way to my destination. Then I rolled them on the way home.

Why? Because I always seemed to need more room coming home — maybe a bottle of wine from Europe, something for the grandkids, or something I found that I absolutely did not plan to buy. Rolling everything on the way home usually bought me just enough extra space.

But over the years, I've changed the way I pack entirely. I've tried packing cubes, compression bags, suction bags, rolling, folding — you name it. And I've realized that the biggest difference isn't how I put things into my suitcase. It's what I put into it in the first place.

The 5-4-3-2-1 Packing Method

One of my favorite ways to keep myself from overpacking is the 5-4-3-2-1 method:

• 5 tops
• 4 bottoms
• 3 layers
• 2 pairs of shoes
• 1 dress or jacket

You can adjust the categories depending on where you're going, but the key is this: every top needs to work with every bottom. If you pack five tops and four bottoms that can all be mixed and matched, you suddenly have far more outfit combinations than you probably need for most vacations.

You're not thinking 'This is Tuesday's outfit.' You're creating a small travel wardrobe. Wear the same pants with a different top. Add a layer. Change your shoes. Add a scarf or jewelry. It looks different without requiring another complete outfit in your suitcase.

Choose Clothes You Can Rewear

The 5-4-3-2-1 method works even better when you choose pieces you can comfortably wear more than once. One fabric I've come to appreciate for travel is merino wool.

Why merino wool works so well for travel:

• It naturally resists odor better than many other fabrics.
• It comes in lightweight versions — not just heavy sweaters.
• It works beautifully for tops and base layers you may want to wear again before washing.
• It's especially useful when packing for changing temperatures.

So when I'm choosing those five tops, I'm not just asking 'Does this go with all four bottoms?' I'm also asking: Can I wear this more than once? That's really the secret to packing lighter.

Start With Your Shoes

Shoes are some of the bulkiest things you'll put in your suitcase, so choose them carefully. Whenever possible, I wear my largest or heaviest pair on the plane.

A few rules I follow:

• Make the shoes you bring work hard — each pair should go with multiple outfits.
• For Europe, comfortable walking shoes are high on my list.
• For a beach vacation, sandals and flip-flops.
• If an outfit requires a special pair of shoes you'll only wear once, ask yourself how badly you really need that outfit.

Pack for the Trip You're Actually Taking

This is where most of us get into trouble. We pack for possibilities. What if we go somewhere fancy? What if it's colder than I expect? What if I don't feel like wearing that?

Pretty soon, we're packing for five imaginary vacations instead of the one we're actually taking. Look at your itinerary:

• Going to a beach resort? You'll spend most of the day in a swimsuit and cover-up — you don't need seven daytime outfits.
• Touring Europe and walking several miles every day? Those cute shoes that aren't comfortable don't deserve valuable suitcase space.
• Pack for what you're actually going to do.

Compression Bags Have a Different Job for Me

I still like compression bags, but I don't use them just to cram more clothing into my suitcase. I especially like them on trips where I'm spending one night here and one night there.

I'll put an outfit or two into a separate compression bag. When I get to the hotel, I can pull out just that bag instead of unpacking my entire suitcase — everything else stays packed and organized, and the next morning I can get back on the road without completely repacking.

But if I really need to create space? That's when I reach for the suction bags.

Suction Bags Saved Me in Hawaii

I used suction bags on my Hawaii trip, and they were amazing. I'll admit it: I bought way too much. Suddenly, I had to figure out how I was going to get everything I'd purchased back home. The suction bags made a huge difference — removing all that excess air from my clothes gave me considerably more room.

One important catch: suction bags make your clothes smaller. They don't make them lighter. You may suddenly have plenty of room in your suitcase and still discover that it weighs more than your airline allows. Keep an eye on the scale, too.

Leave Yourself Some Room

Don't fill every inch of your suitcase before you leave home. Because if you're anything like me, something is probably coming home with you.

I like having a little extra space, and I often bring a lightweight foldable bag that takes up almost no room in my suitcase. That gives me options if I need them. And considering my track record, I usually do.

The Goal Isn't to Pack as Little as Possible

I'm not trying to prove that I can travel through Europe for three weeks with nothing but a backpack. That's not how I want to travel. I want enough choices that I feel comfortable and put together without dragging half my closet around with me.

That's why I like the 5-4-3-2-1 method. It gives you choices, but it also gives you boundaries. To recap:

• 5 tops, 4 bottoms, 3 layers, 2 pairs of shoes, 1 dress or jacket.
• Make sure every piece works with every other piece.
• Choose fabrics like merino wool that can be worn more than once.
• Pack for what you're actually going to do — not everything that might happen.
• Don't pack individual outfits — pack clothes that work together.

You'll be surprised by how many options are already sitting inside your suitcase. And maybe — just maybe — you'll still have enough room for the things you didn't know you needed until you found them on vacation.

I was sitting on the plane when the pilot made the announcement. Maintenance delay. Forty minutes. I immediately pulled up my connecting flight and started doing the math. I was probably going to miss it.

And then I remembered something else — I had checked my bag. Now I had two things to worry about: Would I make my connection? And if I didn't, would my suitcase make it without me?

Everything eventually worked out. I made it. My bag made it. But the experience reminded me that the bag you choose can make a bigger difference in your trip than you might think. It's not simply about how many clothes you want to bring. Your luggage choice can affect how easily you navigate the airport, what happens when your plans change, and how quickly you can get on with your vacation after you land.

Personal Item: Keep the Essentials With You

A personal item is the smaller bag that fits underneath the seat in front of you — a purse, backpack, laptop bag, or small tote, depending on the airline's rules. The biggest advantage is that your bag stays with you: no overhead bin to worry about and no baggage claim when you land.

But don't let the smaller size fool you. A personal item can get surprisingly heavy when you start filling it with:

• A laptop or tablet.
• Chargers and cables.
• Books, medications, and snacks.
• A water bottle and everything else you might want for the flight.

For most of my trips, my personal item isn't my only bag — it's where I keep the things I don't want separated from me: medications, travel documents, electronics, valuables, and anything I would absolutely need if my other luggage didn't arrive when I did.

Carry-On: My Choice for Shorter Trips

If I'm taking a short trip — a long weekend or perhaps four days — I'll usually travel with a carry-on. When the plane lands, I'm done. I can walk off the plane, skip baggage claim, and get started with my trip.

A carry-on also gives me more flexibility when I'm flying an itinerary with connections. If a delay forces me to change flights or routes, I like knowing my belongings are traveling with me.

But carry-ons aren't perfect. A few things to keep in mind:

• Overhead bin space can fill up, especially on a full flight — you may be required to gate-check your bag.
• You need to be able to lift your suitcase into the overhead bin.
• Don't automatically assume a carry-on is included with your ticket — baggage allowances depend on the airline and the fare you've purchased.

Checked Bag: Sometimes More Space Is Worth It

There are also plenty of times when I happily check a suitcase. If I'm taking a longer trip or think I'll be bringing home quite a bit — wine from Napa, ceramics from Portugal, or half of a Disney gift shop — I'm much more likely to check a bag.

Sometimes I simply don't want to haul a suitcase through the airport. If I have a long layover, multiple terminals to navigate, or a longer vacation that requires more clothing, I'd rather check the suitcase and move through the airport with just my personal item.

Of course, there's a trade-off:

• You'll need to arrive early enough to check your bag.
• You may have to pay a fee.
• You'll have to wait for it at baggage claim.
• And if your flight is delayed, your bag's journey becomes its own separate concern.

There is no prize for packing the smallest suitcase possible. If checking a bag makes your trip easier, check the bag.

What If You Have a Tight Connection?

This is one situation where I strongly consider traveling carry-on only, if it's practical. I've been the traveler sitting on a delayed plane watching my connection time disappear minute by minute.

When you're already wondering whether you're going to make the next flight, worrying about whether your suitcase will make it too is one more layer of stress you don't need. A carry-on doesn't guarantee everything will go according to plan — you could still be required to gate-check it — but keeping your belongings with you gives you more flexibility if your travel plans change.

Don't Forget About Your Personal Item

Even when I check a suitcase, there are certain things I don't put in it. Think of it this way: if your checked suitcase didn't arrive until tomorrow, what would you wish you had kept with you?

Those things belong in your personal item:

• Medications.
• Travel documents and passport.
• Electronics and chargers.
• Valuables.
• Anything you'd need during the first day or two of your trip.

How Do You Decide?

Before choosing your luggage for your next trip, ask yourself:

• How long will I be gone?
• Do I have connecting flights, and how tight are those connections?
• Am I likely to shop or bring souvenirs home?
• Can I comfortably lift and manage a carry-on?
• Would I rather pack lighter or avoid hauling luggage through the airport?

Your answers may change from one trip to the next. Mine certainly do.

There Isn't One Right Way to Pack

You'll find travelers who insist that carry-on only is the best way to travel. I don't agree. I've traveled enough to know that the best luggage choice depends on the trip.

Sometimes I want to walk off the airplane and head straight to my destination. Sometimes I want plenty of room to bring things home. And sometimes I'd happily check my suitcase just so I don't have to haul it through the airport.

The right choice isn't about following someone else's packing rules — it's about choosing what will make your trip easier. When I work with clients, we talk through more than hotels and flights. For years, I have done the same thing before every trip to Europe. I walk into my local Citizens Bank about two weeks before departure, order a few hundred dollars' worth of euros, and pick them up over the counter. Then I travel with a credit card that charges no foreign transaction fee, and I always pay in the local currency rather than dollars.

I felt good about this system. Organized. Prepared. The kind of thing I tell clients to do. And then I started reading articles about converting money — and I started to question everything.

Paying with a credit card is the easy part. A few rules cover it:

• Use a credit card, not a debit card.
• Make sure the card has no foreign transaction fees.
• Always pay in the local currency, never dollars.
• Know that the exchange rate may shift slightly between the day you buy something and the day the card company processes it, but that difference is small enough that it should not meaningfully change your final cost.
• Never use the currency exchange services at the airport.

What caught my attention was the advice about converting dollars to euros once you arrive in country — and that got me wondering whether I had been doing it wrong for 40 years. So I decided to actually run the numbers.

I have a trip to Amsterdam in about two months, which makes this the perfect time to do some research. I set up a simple comparison using the two ways I would realistically get euros, with my own two cards:

• Method one is what I always do: order $300 worth of euros from Citizens Bank before I leave home.
• Method two is what the articles recommend: withdraw $300 worth of euros from a bank ATM after I land in Amsterdam, using my Chase Ink Business Preferred.

To compare them fairly, I needed a single honest benchmark — the mid-market rate, the true value of a dollar in euros before anyone adds a markup. On the day I ran these numbers, one dollar was worth about 0.865 euros. At that rate, $300 would buy roughly 259 euros in a perfect world. No method actually hits that number.

Method one — Citizens Bank, before I leave: When you order euros at your home bank, the bank gives you its own retail exchange rate, which includes a markup over the mid-market rate. Banks typically build in somewhere around two to five percent. At a middle estimate of about four percent, my $300 comes back as roughly 249 euros, picked up at the counter with no drama.

The rate is not the best available. But there are no other fees stacked on top, no interest, and no math to do while jet-lagged in a foreign city. I hand over dollars, I get euros, I go home.

Method two — ATM in Amsterdam: This is where I expected to feel foolish, and where the surprise showed up instead — though not in the way I anticipated.

First, a fact worth knowing: the Geldmaat network — the yellow ATMs run by the Dutch banks — now charges a fee to foreign cardholders. As of 2023, that fee is €2.00 per withdrawal for cards issued outside the EU and EEA, which includes every US-issued card. It is a small line item in isolation, but it is real, it was not there a few years ago, and most of the articles recommending ATM withdrawals in Amsterdam were written before this change.

Even setting that fee aside, there is a bigger issue for anyone using a credit card. When you pull cash from an ATM with a credit card, it is not a purchase — it is a cash advance. On my Chase Ink Business Preferred, a cash advance costs fifteen dollars or five percent, whichever is greater, plus interest of around twenty-nine percent that starts the very moment the cash leaves the machine.

So on that $300 withdrawal, here is how the math actually works:

• The ATM's exchange rate saves me roughly ten euros over my home bank.
• The Geldmaat fee for a US-issued card costs me €2.00 off the top — not €0.50 like European foreign cards pay.
• The cash advance fee on my Chase card costs me fifteen dollars immediately.
• Interest at 29% begins accruing from the moment of withdrawal.
• Net result: I spent roughly twenty-five dollars more than I would have at Citizens Bank — to get ten dollars' worth of better exchange rate.

The math is not close.

The method everyone online told me was better turned out to be the more expensive one for me. Not because the articles are wrong, exactly — the ATM really does give a better base exchange rate. But that advice quietly assumes you are using a debit card, where an ATM withdrawal is free or nearly free.

I do not travel with a debit card, and I do not recommend it. Here is why:

• If a debit card is compromised, thieves are pulling straight from your bank account — and you are the one waiting to be made whole.
• If a credit card is compromised, it is the bank's money at risk until you dispute the charge.

That safety choice is worth far more to me than ten dollars. And once you make that choice, the credit card turns every ATM withdrawal into a cash advance — and the whole 'better rate' argument collapses.

I was wrong about being wrong. For the way I travel — with a credit card I trust and no debit card in my wallet — converting a set amount of euros at my home bank before I leave is not the lazy, expensive option I feared it was. It is convenient, it is safe, and it is competitive on cost.

A few honest caveats:

• If you are comfortable carrying a travel debit card, especially one that reimburses ATM fees, the ATM method likely does still win for you — just factor in the Geldmaat foreign fee now.
• Different card, different answer.
• No matter which method you choose: if you do use an ATM abroad, look for machines attached to an actual bank — not the bright blue Euronet ones clustered in tourist streets.
• Whenever any machine or reader offers to charge you in dollars instead of euros, always choose euros, so your own bank sets the rate rather than the machine.

One more note on ATM safety. Going inside a bank protects you from card skimmers — the little devices thieves attach to a machine's card slot to copy your information. Chip cards have made skimming less common in the Netherlands than it once was, but covering the keypad as you enter your PIN is still a good habit.

Also be aware of a scam where someone dressed as a police officer approaches a tourist, claims to be checking for counterfeit bills, and asks to inspect your wallet. Real police do not stop you on the street and ask to see your money. If it ever happens, you are well within your rights to decline and ask to walk to the nearest police station.

One last tip: if you come home with euros left over, keep them. Euros do not expire, so tuck them away for your next trip rather than losing money converting them back. Whatever you do, do not exchange them at the airport, where the rates are at their worst.

If all of this makes your head spin, here is my real reassurance: it is perfectly fine to walk into your bank, order your euros, and get on the plane. That is what I will be doing, and I ran the numbers to prove it to myself.

We had one day on the Big Island. Our ship pulled into Kona in the morning, and we had until late afternoon before it left again.

This was our very first island stop of the cruise, so we did the thing you do on your first island stop. We rented a red Mustang convertible. Top down, sunglasses on, absolutely certain we were about to have the best day of the trip.

And I did what I always tell my clients not to do on a port day. I overplanned.

I had a list. I had read the articles. I knew about the black sand beaches and the hot ponds and the valley you could supposedly hike down into. I had the whole island mapped in my head, the way you do when you have never actually stood on a place and think a map is the same as knowing it.

A few things worth knowing about the Big Island before you go:

• It is the largest of the Hawaiian islands — larger than all the others combined.
• On a single day in port from Kona, you will see a sliver of it and nothing more.
• It is a place still being built by its volcanoes, which means the map you read at home is often older than the ground under your feet.
• The smartest thing you can do with one day here is pick one direction, drive it slowly, and let the island be bigger than your plan.

I learned all of that the way I learn most things. The hard way.

The Road North — We drove north out of Kona on Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway, toward the Kohala Coast and the ranch country around Waimea. The convertible was wonderful for about twenty minutes.

Then the sun found us. There is no shade on that highway — none — just black rock throwing the heat back up at you from both sides. The top that had felt like freedom in the parking lot started to feel like a decision I had not thought all the way through.

So we did the only sensible thing. We put the top up. I will save you the suspense: on every island after this one, we skipped the convertibles.

But I was not prepared for the lava. I had read the words "lava fields" a dozen times. Reading it does nothing.

Nothing prepares you for the actual sight of it — mile after mile of black rock spread out on both sides of the road, glossy and bare, running from the mountains all the way down to the sea. It looks like it cooled last week. It did not.

The flows along that stretch of coast are close to two hundred years old, from eruptions in 1800 and 1801. They stay black and bare because that side of the island barely gets any rain, so almost nothing grows over them. You are driving through the year 1801 and it looks like yesterday.

I kept saying it out loud. "Look at this. Just look at this." My husband, who had been driving, finally stopped answering because there was nothing to add.

The Goats — Then there were the goats. I did not read about the goats in a single article. Not one.

But there they were, all along the road, picking their way across the lava as if black rock were a perfectly reasonable thing to build a life on. Whole clusters of them. Wild, unbothered, completely at home in a landscape that looked like the surface of the moon.

I have thought about those goats more than almost anything else from that day. Here is the thing about travel that no itinerary can give you: the lava fields were the sight I came to see. The goats were the thing I actually remember.

You cannot plan the goats. You cannot put them on a list. They are the reason you go at all, and they only show up when you slow down enough to notice them.

We stopped along the Kohala Coast, where the beaches are. After all that black rock, the beaches feel almost impossible — pale sand and blue water sitting right at the edge of the lava.

We did not stop for coffee, which on the Big Island is nearly a crime. Kona coffee is grown right there on the slopes above the water, and every guidebook will send you to a farm tour. We got ice cream instead. I regret nothing.

What the Island Was Quietly Teaching Me — Here is what I did not fully understand until I was standing on it. Half of what I had put on my list was not there anymore. Or not open. Or not what the article promised.

That was not bad luck. That is the Big Island.

Things that had changed since the articles I read were written:

• Waipiʻo Valley has been closed to visitors on foot since 2022. You can stand at the lookout — and it is a stunning view — but the hike down that I had penciled in was never going to happen.
• Ahalanui warm pond no longer exists. Lava from the 2018 Kīlauea eruption ran straight over it. The pond, the park, the road to it — all of it gone under fresh black rock.
• Kīlauea itself has been erupting on and off since late 2024, in short bursts scientists call episodes. When active, the lava is viewed from a distance inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park — not something you stroll up to.
• Parts of the park open and close with the volcano's mood. What is true the week you book may not be true the week you sail.

The very same force that made those fields I could not stop staring at had erased one of the stops on my list a few years before I arrived.

None of this is a warning to stay away. It is the opposite.

The Big Island is one of the most extraordinary places I have set foot on, and I saw it for a single day through a windshield. But it rewards the traveler who understands what they are actually walking into, and it quietly embarrasses the one who shows up with a printout and an old map.

That is the whole job, really. Knowing which valley is closed. Knowing which pond is gone. Knowing that a port day gives you one direction, not the whole island, and helping you choose the direction that will stay with you.

I chose north, toward the lava and the goats and the ice cream. I chose well.

If the Big Island Is on Your List — If a Hawaii cruise is somewhere on your someday list and the Big Island is one of the stops, here is my honest advice:

• Do not try to see all of it in a day. You cannot, and the trying will cost you the goats.
• Pick one coast. Drive it slowly.
• Build in more time than you think you need — the island is far larger than it looks on the map, and the ship will not wait.
• Let me check what is actually open before you go. The ground here changes, sometimes literally.
